Never
give credit card numbers, Social Security numbers or
other personal identifying information over the phone
unless you called the individual or company.
|
|
Review your
credit report at least once a year. |
|
Protect
incoming and outgoing mail. Remove incoming mail from
your mailbox as soon as possible. Never leave outgoing
mail in your mailbox or doorway. Instead deposit it in a
blue collection box or take it to the local post office.
Unfortunately, leaving that red flag up on your mailbox
can alert thieves that there is something of value in
the box. |
|
To deter
thieves from finding personal information in your
garbage, shred credit card slips, monthly bank
statements, unused credit card offers or loan checks.
|
|
Be extra
careful with ATM receipts, credit card slips and any
bank information. Always take ATM or credit card
receipts. Also, never leave your wallet unattended.
|
|
Closely
review your credit card bills and bank statements for
charges you did not authorize and report any
discrepancies. Balance your checkbook each month. Both
of these safeguards may help you discover if your
identity has been stolen. |
|
Carry only
the credit or identification cards that you actually use
in your wallet. Try and limit yourself to only one or
two credit cards, a debit card and a few personal
checks. |
|
If you become
aware of anyone using your identity immediately notify
creditors, law enforcement authorities and the major
credit bureaus. |
