Bankers Teach Children to Save

A poor economy is the perfect time to talk about saving money

One lesson that can be learned from this faltering economy is that financial literacy plays a significant role in improving the lives of individual as well as helping the economy thrive. The Stephenson National Bank & Trust (SNB&T) will bring this “teachable moment” to area classrooms with lessons on the importance of saving.

As part of the 15th annual National Teach Children to Save Day on April 27, SNB&T bankers will visit grades K-12 at public and parochial classrooms in Marinette, Menominee, and Oconto. They will focus on money management lessons that incorporate games and activities about the concept of saving, how to create a budget, and how to identify needs versus wants.

Last year, SNB&T helped achieve the ABA Education Foundation’s Million Child Challenge, a nationwide goal of providing financial education to 1 million children in 2009. SNB&T used the Million Child Challenge as an opportunity to speak with hundreds of young people about the importance of using money responsibly.

“With Americans spending more and saving less, unfortunately, many children learn how to spend their money, before they are taught how to save it,” said Diane Gromoske, SNB&T personal banker and Teach Children to Save Day coordinator. “Smart money managers are made not born; the sooner children learn about saving and budgeting, the sooner they can develop good financial habits.

“Through this crucial program, we believe we can help young people in our area better understand the basic, practical aspects of money management,” continued Gromoske. “We have a big job ahead of us in creating a financially literate America, but our bankers are ready and willing to do their part.”

The Teach Children to Save Day program has connected more than 80,000 bankers across the country with 3.4 million students since it was founded in 1997 by the ABA Education Foundation.

The ABA Education Foundation is a non-profit subsidiary of American Bankers Association committed to developing and providing educational programs that lead to financial literacy.
